Welcome to the Student Success in Psychology and Neuroscience Canvas site! This site was created to provide students in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience with ideas, resources, information, and great advice from current and former students and professors so that you can make the most of your undergraduate experience in our department. This website will also help to guide you through some of the options and opportunities that are available to you as a Psychology and Neuroscience graduate. You will have lots of career and training opportunities with a degree from our department, even though you may know very little about those choices right now. We hope that the information and videos we’ve included here will help you benefit from your undergraduate experience, develop a sense of connection to our department and its many offerings, and, eventually, choose a path that’s right for you.

There are 5 main sections of the Student Success site.

You as a Student

One of the first things to pay attention to after you have decided to major in Psychology or Neuroscience is making the most out of your student experience. This section of the site will help answer questions like “How can I succeed in the classes I’m interested in (and even ones I’m not)?” “How can I plan my courses so that I make the best use of my time at CU?” “How can I develop good relationships with my professors?” “How can I get involved in activities outside of the classroom? “What resources on campus can help me navigate my next steps?” In this section of the website, you’ll find links to some useful departmental and campus resources, some advice from students (in the form of videos) about how they made the most of their time in the classroom, and some additional advice and links.

Your Future Career

Students from the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience do lots of things with their degrees, from sales positions, to user experience positions in industry, to human resources careers, to education, to public health, to clinical careers like social work and counseling, to research positions and, yes, careers that require Ph.D.s or Psy.D.s in Psychology or Neuroscience. There are many more choices than we can cover, but we hope that the information we’ve gathered here, including videos from some of our students who have gone on to interesting careers, will help you envision your own future possibilities. Not all careers in Psychology and Neuroscience require graduate degrees, but if you are interested in graduate training, you should check out the next section of the Canvas site: Your Additional Training.

Your Additional Training

Many (but not all!) of our students go on to pursue master’s or doctoral degrees in fields related to Psychology or Neuroscience. This section of the Canvas site can help you think about what future training might look like for you, how to investigate different programs, how to position yourself to successfully apply to graduate programs, how to ask for letters of recommendation from faculty, and how to evaluate goodness of fit between your goals and programs you pursue training in. We’ve included information on clinically-oriented careers, since those are the kind of programs that many of our students are interested in, but also have some information about other kinds of training too.

Resources

One of the advantages of going to a large University, and belonging to a large department, is that there are lots of resources that are available for you to use. There are links to various resources through the Canvas site, and we’ve also attempted to provide links to everything that’s been mentioned on the site in this section as well.

For starters, here are 3 resources that most of our students have found invaluable:

Our own advising office, can help you make the most of your time as a student, so that you stay on track with the departmental requirements and stay informed about courses, activities, internships and careers that might be of particular interest to you.
The Career Services office can help you make decisions about your major, start thinking about skills you want to develop as a student, and, later on, help you put together resumes, cover letters and even prepare for interviews.
The Disability Services office can help students who come to CU with a learning difficulty, or students who identify a learning issue once they arrive at CU, to get the support, accommodations and guidance they need to succeed.

These pages gather announcements from prior years and sorts them into their relevant categories (e.g., research assistant announcements, research participation opportunities, and general announcements) so only the current announcements are visible on the announcements tab.
