The course explores complex relationships between culture and communication processes from various conceptual perspectives, with a focus on critical perspectives. Considers the important role of context (e.g., social, historical, and cultural) in intercultural interactions. Recommended Prerequisites: COMM 1210 and COMM 1600.

Meet your instructor

I'm Bernardita Yunis and I've been teaching for almost a decade. I am a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Communication department in the College of Media, Communication, & Information focusing on rhetoric, culture, identity, and critical race. Before teaching here, I taught one year at the University of Denver, and 3 years at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. I have also taught at the University of the District of Columbia and the Pennsylvania State University. I've been teaching writing courses, communication courses (group comm., public speaking), as well as English for Language Learners throughout my career.

Originally born in Viña del Mar, Chile, I moved to the U.S. in 1996 at 10 years old and grew up in Miami, Florida and lived in NYC, Pennsylvania, D.C., and now Denver. I have been involved in social justice as a student activist and progressive leader, and have trained youth activists with Young People For since 2010 where I was also a mentor. At the various universities I have been in, I worked in Writing Centers on campus and I am excited to help you with your learning and writing. I love watching TV (big Bob's Burgers, Handmaid's Tale, anything StarWars, Marvel, DoctorWho, Brooklyn 99 fan!) and trying new recipes to make fun food.
