DESCRIPTION

This course is a detailed exploration into the emerging and ever more important realm of live-streaming production and content development. As with many other forms of traditional media, the limitations on content creators is no longer a major setback in terms of producing professional quality, engaging content for online and remote audiences. As society continues to socially distance, the methodologies explored within this course will help students emerge as proficient and knowledgeable practitioners of live-streaming content production and become influential creative leaders, and technical experts within this ever expanding discipline.

Through lectures, class discussions, technical demos, projects, and critiques, this course will prepare students to develop compelling live-streaming experiences and will impart a strong critical understanding of the historical and conceptual impacts of live media on the web. This course will focus on creating engaging experiences utilizing established tools and techniques for live-streaming production including Open Broadcast Software, motion graphics, sound & set design, visual asset development, and more.

HARDWARE / SOFTWARE

  • A reliable laptop computer, brought to class every day, used for class projects, homework, and design challenges
  • OBS, Streamlabs, vMix
  • Adobe Creative Cloud subscription: Student Account
  • Minimum of 20GB of free hard drive space on your computer
  • A second monitor for improved workflow and productivity
  • Stand-alone webcam, lighting, green screen, microphone, etc.  (Dont worry about these just yet)

ATTENDANCE

Class attendance is required and will be taken every day. You have three absences that can be used before your class grade begins to fall. Each absence after your third (fourth and beyond) will decrease your final class grade by 5%. Attending class is incredibly important in order to be successful within the course.

To receive attendance credit for the day, you must either be present in the physical classroom or join the class Zoom between 11:30AM and 1:20PM and acknowledge that you are doing ok with the class content.  (Or ask questions if you are having problems)

Attendance on critique days is required for the full class period.  (See major project due dates above)  On critique days, if you are joining class remotely, web cams should be on for the entire class period. (With brief exceptions)

I don't do excused vs. unexcused absences. You have 3 absences. Save them for emergencies.

You do not need to send me doctor’s notes, ever.

If you miss class, follow these steps:

  1. Check the class Canvas page to see what was covered that class period. (Usually, there are readings and other resources that can help get you back on track)
  2. Review the video lectures and demos for that day.
  3. Visit the instructor in office hours if questions remain.

You are still responsible for turning in assignments and projects, on time, regardless of whether or not you attended class.

Attendance Exceptions...

Campus policy regarding religious observances requires that faculty make every effort to deal reasonably and fairly with all students who, because of religious obligations, have conflicts with scheduled exams, assignments or required attendance. I will be happy to make accommodations for you, provided that you notify me of your religious observances in a timely manner.

Campus policy regarding varsity student athletes requires that faculty make every effort to deal reasonably and fairly with athletes who, because of competition schedules, have conflicts with scheduled exams, assignments or required attendance. I will be happy to make accommodations for you, provided that you notify me of your competition schedule in a timely manner with a signed letter from a CU Athletics Administrator.

  • Large projects are due at the beginning of class on their assigned due dates.
  • In-class design challenges are due by the beginning of the next class period after being assigned.

For more information, see the policies on COVID-19 Health and Safety and classroom behavior and the Student Code of Conduct. If you require accommodation because a disability prevents you from fulfilling these safety measures, please see the “Accommodation for Disabilities” statement on this syllabus.

Before returning to campus, all students must complete the COVID-19 Student Health and Expectations Course. Before coming on to campus each day, all students are required to complete a Daily Health Form.

Students who have tested positive for COVID-19, have symptoms of COVID-19, or have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for or had symptoms of COVID-19 must stay home and complete the Health Questionnaire and Illness Reporting Form remotely. In this class, if you are sick or quarantined, simply attend class lectures remotely (if you are well enough)

ACCOMMODATION FOR DISABILITIES

If you qualify for accommodations because of a disability, please submit your accommodation letter from Disability Services to your faculty member in a timely manner so that your needs can be addressed.  Disability Services determines accommodations based on documented disabilities in the academic environment.  Information on requesting accommodations is located on the Disability Services website.
